To Do Before School Begins
What to bring to school
- Water bottle
- Lunch (optional - see School Food below)
- Any NYC DOE issued device (i.e laptop, tablet, chromebook, or ipad) brought in for updates
This year, our Parent Teacher Organization is purchasing school supplies for every PS9 student! They are excited to pilot this effort to be more cost efficient and environmentally friendly.
While in general, the supplies your student will need for learning will already be in their classroom, your student's teacher may request a few additional personal items (for example pre-k students typically need to have a change of clothes and a sheet for nap time).
Students are expected to be at their designated arrival location and prepared to enter the school building at 8:20 am. If you would like to speak with your student's teacher, morning drop-off is not a good time. Kindly send a note to the teacher to set up an appointment for a different time.
All students arriving after 8:30 am are considered late. They must enter the school through the main entrance on Underhill Avenue, then proceed to their classroom where they will be marked late by the classroom teacher.
Drop off locations
Use the St. Mark’s Avenue gate entrance with the stairs and follow the walkway around the lower school yard for direct access to pre-K classrooms. Caregivers will sign pre-K students in at their classroom doors. pre-K classroom door numbers are 9, 11, 12, and 13 and are labeled with teacher’s names. The first two mornings only, pre-K arrival will be at 9:00 am in the Lower Yard.
Use the St. Mark’s Avenue gate entrance with stairs for direct access to the lower yard and line up in the designated line for each teacher. Teachers will lead their classes into the building through Exit 5.
Use the Large Gate Entrance on St. Marks Avenue to enter the upper school yard. Assemble on the front tennis area closest to the street and line up in the designated location for each class. Teachers will lead their classes into the building through Exit 10.
Use the Large Gate Entrance on St. Marks Avenue to enter the upper school yard. Assemble on the basketball court and line up in the designated location for each class. Teachers will lead their classes into the building through Exit 5.
Grades 3 to 5
Use the Large Gate Entrance on St. Marks Avenue to enter the upper school yard. Assemble on the back soccer area and line up in the designated location for each class. Grade 3 teachers will lead their classes into the building through Exit 5. Grade 4 and 5 teachers will lead their classes into the building through Exit 10.
School dismisses daily at 2:40 pm (except on designated half-days). Students are not allowed to leave with anyone other than the adult(s) listed on their Emergency Contact Card (found in Operoo). Students who are not picked up on time - by 2:40 pm - will be brought to the auditorium. To pick up a student adults must enter through the main entrance on Underhill Ave.
Pick up locations
Students exit directly from their classroom. Caregivers can enter through the schoolyard entrance (with the stairs) on St. Marks Avenue and line up outside their student’s classroom door.
Kindergarten to Grade 5
Once the large gates are opened by a PS9 staff member, caregivers may enter the yard to pick up students at their designated location.
On-Site After School
Four organizations offer on-site after school programming at PS9. On-site after school begins on Monday, September 19. Participating students are picked up directly from their classrooms by after school providers.

Free Meals for All Students
The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) offers free breakfast and lunch to all NYC public school students during the school year, as well as summer meals to anyone 18 years old and under. You do not need to apply for your child to receive meals.
We strongly encourage all families to fill out the Family Income Inquiry Form - regardless of whether their student eats school lunch or brings food from home. The DOE uses information from this form to allocate funding to schools - filling it out helps our school to get more of the funding it deserves! The form will be sent home with each student. Copies are also available in the school's main office.
School Food Menus
PS9 currently serves the Breakfast Express and Pre-K - 8 Express Hot Lunch menu. PS9 also has a salad bar available. The Schoolfood mobile app is available for iOS - you may want to download it for your convenience.
Breakfast is available to all children at no cost. Pre-kindergarten students are served breakfast in their classrooms. Students in kindergarten to grade 5 have the option of grabbing the Express Breakfast on their way to class. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast in their first class.
School lunch is available to all students at no cost, or families may choose to send lunch from home instead. If your child brings lunch, please be sure that no glass bottles or containers, soda, or gum are included. Pre-Kindergarten students are served breakfast in their classrooms while students in kindergarten to grade 5 eat lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch is 25 minutes (half of a period). One grade at a time eats lunch in the cafeteria while another grade has recess in the school yard - the grades then switch activities for the other half of the period. Schedules will be provided in the forthcoming Family and Caregiver Handbook.
Eligibility for transportation provided by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is based on:
- student’s grade level
- walking distance between home and school
- existing accommodations based on a medical condition
- housing status or safety assessment
To learn more about qualifying for busing or a MetroCard, visit the Transportation Eligibility page on the DOE's website.
You may also contact the school's Transportation Coordinator to request a new service or a change to an existing service.
