First Day of School: September 8, 2022

School Day: 8:20 am - 2: 40 pm

On Thursday, September 8 and Friday, September 9 pre-kindergarten students will attend from 9:00 am to 11:20 am. These first two mornings only, pre-K arrival will be in the lower school yard.

Supplies

What to bring to school

    • Backpack
    • Water bottle
    • Lunch (optional - see School Food below)
    • Any NYC DOE issued device (i.e laptop, tablet, chromebook, or ipad) brought in for updates

This year, our Parent Teacher Organization is purchasing school supplies for every PS9 student! They are excited to pilot this effort to be more cost efficient and environmentally friendly.

While in general, the supplies your student will need for learning will already be in their classroom, your student's teacher may request a few additional personal items (for example pre-k students typically need to have a change of clothes and a sheet for nap time).

Students are expected to be at their designated arrival location and prepared to enter the school building at 8:20 am. If you would like to speak with your student's teacher, morning drop-off is not a good time. Kindly send a note to the teacher to set up an appointment for a different time.

All students arriving after 8:30 am are considered late. They must enter the school through the main entrance on Underhill Avenue, then proceed to their classroom where they will be marked late by the classroom teacher.

School Food

Free Meals for All Students

The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) offers free breakfast and lunch to all NYC public school students during the school year, as well as summer meals to anyone 18 years old and under. You do not need to apply for your child to receive meals.

We strongly encourage all families to fill out the Family Income Inquiry Form - regardless of whether their student eats school lunch or  brings food from home. The DOE uses information from this form to allocate funding to schools - filling it out helps our school to get more of the funding it deserves! The form will be sent home with each student. Copies are also available in the school's main office.

School Food Menus

PS9 currently serves the Breakfast Express and Pre-K - 8 Express Hot Lunch menu. PS9 also has a salad bar available. The Schoolfood mobile app is available for iOS - you may want to download it for your convenience.

Breakfast

Breakfast is available to all children at no cost. Pre-kindergarten students are served breakfast in their classrooms. Students in kindergarten to grade 5 have the option of grabbing the Express Breakfast on their way to class. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast in their first class.

Lunch/Recess

School lunch is available to all students at no cost, or families may choose to send lunch from home instead. If your child brings lunch, please be sure that no glass bottles or containers, soda, or gum are included. Pre-Kindergarten students are served breakfast in their classrooms while students in kindergarten to grade 5 eat lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch is 25 minutes (half of a period). One grade at a time eats lunch in the cafeteria while another grade has recess in the school yard - the grades then switch activities for the other half of the period. Schedules will be provided in the forthcoming Family and Caregiver Handbook.

School Transportation

Eligibility for transportation provided by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is based on:

  • student’s grade level
  • walking distance between home and school
  • existing accommodations based on a medical condition
  • housing status or safety assessment

To learn more about qualifying for busing or a MetroCard, visit the Transportation Eligibility page on the DOE's website.

You may also contact the school's Transportation Coordinator to request a new service or a change to an existing service.
