New York City families with children born in 2012 can apply to Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year until January 13, 2017. In New York City, children are eligible to apply to kindergarten in the year they turn five. Each winter, Kindergarten applications are accepted for the coming school year and every child is guaranteed a Kindergarten placement.
All schools are expected to serve the majority of special education students in their community, and all schools are required to provide, at minimum, English as a New Language (ENL) programs to their English Language Learners.
Apply one of three ways:
- Online via the New York City Department of Education’s application site
- By phone at 718-935-2400
- In person at a Family Welcome Center
You can list up to 12 choices on your Kindergarten Application—remember to include the program code and to consider more than one choice.
All applications received by the January 13 deadline are treated the same—the DOE’s application process is not first-come, first-served. You can update your application until the January 13 deadline, if you have already submitted. Learn more about the Kindergarten application process on the DOE website: http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/Elementary/kindergarten.htm.
