Calling all dads, grandfathers, uncles and brothers: Grab your favorite 2nd-5th grade PS 9 boy and come to PS 9’s Eigth Annual Real Men Read event this Saturday, May 30, from 8:30 to 2:30. [Check out our Real Men Read Webpage]
Our male students in grades 2-5 will be encouraged to participate in shared reading with the males from their families and the Prospect Heights community. The day’s events will also include presentations by dads, mentors and male role models (young and old); plus cool clinics on becoming an author, cooking, dressing for success, woodworking, hobbies, archery, cycling, soccer, and much more.
PS 9 launched this annual event 8 years ago to raise awareness of the importance of reading and male involvement in the lives of boys. Nationwide data shows that male students are not making the types of gains in their reading and literacy skills that female students are making. We are dedicated to continuing to address this disparity.
At last year’s event, close to 300 people attended and we hosted notables, such as Borough President Eric Adams’ office (presented with a Brooklyn citation); Assembly Member Walter T. Mosley, NY Jets Left Tackle D’Brickshaw Ferguson; WeAmaze New York City; Carlos Walton, founder of African People Exalted (APEX); Author, Adam Gidwitz; and select Prospect Heights residents, community partners and merchants.
