This past June, PS 9 was awarded a bronze medal for Excellence in School Wellness from the NYC Strategic Alliance for Health. PTO wellness committee chair Jen Chapin, parent coordinator Charmaine Derrell-Jacob and PS 9 student Ginella (pictured above, far right) were at the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of PS 9. Jen sees the award as part of PS 9’s continuing growth in the wellness area. “To win a gold, you have to have a written wellness policy and other nifty things, which we’re working towards,” she says. “The recognition helps us move forward.”

PS 9’s wellness committee has been hard at work. They’re most visible at Movie Night, serving organic hot dogs and healthy snacks to families (who knew that so many kids could be turned on to roasted seaweed?). The committee won a $2,500 “School Wellness Council Champion” grant, which they used to buy gym equipment and support PS 9’s LAVA acrobatics program. They got a cooling water jet for the cafeteria and started the process for obtaining a salad bar. They helped provide healthy breakfast bars to students on testing days. And they partner with the garden committee on the PS 9 garden and outdoor classroom. Here’s to getting the gold this year!
