Prospect Heights Craft Fair: Call for Artists, Crafters, Designers

Shoppers at PS 9's 2011 Craft Fair. Photo by Stephanie Keith.

It’s that time of year again where we are preparing for the Prospect Heights Craft Fair to support the arts programs at PS 9. This year’s fair will take place on Saturday, April 21st from 11am to 6pm and we are putting a call out for artisans of all kinds to apply to sell their wares at the event. Deadline to apply is March 10th. If you’re interested or know a crafter that is, please tell them about our great event. Last years’s fair raised nearly $7,000 for the school. Proceeds support PS 9’s arts programs, including art, dance and workshops with such groups as LAVA (acrobatics), Studio in a School, and the Guggenheim Museum.

More details about this crafting extravaganza and the application form can be found online at www.prospectheightscraftfair.com . If you have any further questions, please email us at prospectheightscraftfair at gmail dot com.

In addition, if you’re interested in helping out with the planning in any way, please let me know. Like last year, we will have kid activities and a raffle to add to the day’s excitement.

Many Thanks,

Faye, Craft Fair Committee member

PS 9 Robotics Team Heads to City Finals

Congratulations to PS 9′s Robotics team for qualifying for the First Lego League’s citywide competition on March 18!  At the Brooklyn-wide event on January 14, judges advanced the team to the citywide event at the Jacob Javits Center. Seventeen students in grades 3-5 have participated this year, meeting twice a week through the fall to prepare robots and research that address this year’s theme of “Keeping Food Safe.” The team this year nicknamed itself “Bacteria Terminators.” Ms. Moore (second grade teacher), Ms. Codrington (upper-grade science teacher) and Ursula Koniges (“Ms. Ursula”), a volunteer grad student from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, have advised this year’s team.

The team will demonstrate their robot project on February 29 at PS 9′s school-wide science fair. This is the second year in a row that a PS 9 team has gone to the citywide finals. Last year, an artificial kidney design earned some of our current fifth graders the judges’ praise in the research event. Three team members from that team participated this year as well.

Fundraising at PS 9 Never Looked So Good!

[salon]718, a great hair salon just down the block from PS 9, has generously offered to donate a portion service costs to PS 9. For a limited time only, between Sunday, January 22nd through Sunday, February 5th, when you book an appointment, mention the PS 9 fundraiser and half of the cost of a haircut will be donated to our school.

The owner of the salon, Michaella, also a Brooklyn mom (with great hair!) has been styling men and women’s hair for two decades. Prior to opening her own salon, she managed top salons in NY and was the head stylist for national and local televised make-over shows. She has also trained some of the country’s finest stylists in cut and color.

Check out the [salon]718 website: http://www.salon718.com  to see the service menu and pricing. Whether it’s a cut, color, or a blow-out that you need to cure those winter blues, Michaella and her staff can accommodate you. Their rates are very reasonable so check out the wide range of services offered then call to make an appointment at 718-623-6153.
