Volunteer News!

Planting bulbs

At PS 9, we have a strong community of parent volunteers who make the school a better place and have a lot of fun doing it. (Sure, it’s about our kids, but it’s also about us, creating community for ourselves!) Click here for news and photos from some of our recent projects, like our Fall Garden Extravaganza. Then read below for some of the ways you can join us in our efforts to make PS 9 a world-class elementary school.

Join a PTO Committee

PTO committees are important part of making the school run, and there’s a committee for every skill and interest, from baking cupcakes to managing a website. Check out our current committees by clicking here, and see if something speaks to you. Please don’t be shy—we need your help! And it’s a great way to get to know fellow parents and get a better sense of the school.

Become a Class Parent

A field trip volunteer

Each classroom needs a class parent to help facilitate communication between the teachers and the parents of students in that class, and to help the teachers when they need parent volunteers or other assistance.  Class parents are also an important way for the administration and the PTO to get information out to the school community. Class parents attend monthly meetings at the school, PTA meetings and accompany classes on field trips when they are able.
Parents may also volunteer on an individual basis during school-year celebrations and field trips.

Please contact your child’s teacher or email parent coordinator Charmaine Derrell-Jacob at cderrell@schools.nyc.gov to become a class parent, and join our email group by sending a blank email to ps9classparents-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

(Parents are welcome to join the email group even if they don’t want to commit to being an official class parent. It’ll be a way to stay informed about what’s needed, and you can step in and help if and when you can.)

Check our school calendar to see when the next class parent meeting takes place!

Become a Family Reading or Math Buddy

Family Reading & Math Buddies are volunteers for bi-weekly Friday reading and/or math fun in classrooms. Volunteers can participate in many different ways:

  • read aloud to students individually, in small groups or to the class
  • listen to children read aloud
  • facilitate math activities or games
  • and much more!

Volunteers must sign up with our Parent Coordinator, Charmaine Derrell-Jacob, at cderrell@schools.nyc.gov to get started.

Become a Learning Leader Volunteer

Learning Leaders are volunteers who are trained to work as tutors and to perform other types of much-needed functions in the school.  Founded in 1956, Learning Leaders was the first school volunteer program of its kind and now serves nearly 250,000 students.  Training sessions are conducted in district-wide cluster sessions each fall or at Learning Leaders’ home office.  Please contact our Parent Coordinator, Charmaine Derrell-Jacob, at cderrell@schools.nyc.gov to become a certified school volunteer. Make a difference in the life of a public school student, become a learning leader volunteer! Learning Leaders is open to parents, family members and members of the community.
