Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (Joint SLT/PTO Committee)
PS 9 has a reputation as being one of the most economically and racially diverse schools in Brooklyn that is considered a success. We agree, but what does this mean? Who are we, what does this success mean, and how can we build on the strength of our diversity? Please join a few of us who are having a conversation about difference and diversity at PS 9.
Provide strategic support in order to maximize the success of existing fundraising initiatives, including developing communications, increasing volunteerism, and establishing comprehensive calendar. Focus on Annual Appeal and increasing support from beyond the immediate PS 9 community of families.
Construct plant beds, plant with the children, work on landscape design, research grants, and maintain a garden in the space around PS 9. Want to pitch in to make the school a greener place? Dig in with our budding gardeners!

Research sources of funding, write grant applications, and reach out to teachers. This committee has successfully procured grants for The Whole Child Network Program, soundproofing for the cafeteria and various technology and gardening grants. We want to get more arts funding and enhance our educational programs.

Assist the PS 9 staff and help our younger students learn to navigate the busy lunchroom and play safely on the playground. Kindergarten and 1st grade students especially benefit from family involvement during this part of their school day.
Parent Advocacy Committee
Add your voice to advocate for the resources PS 9 needs so that our children — who come from all walks of life — will succeed. Help write letters to local elected officials, make calls, distribute petitions and more.

Transportation Team (Informal Committee)
One of the core pillars of our Whole Child Network approach is safety in and around PS 9. If you witness an unsafe traffic situation near the school (as a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian), it’s important to report it. And, you can join our Transportation Team to help develop approaches to keep the sidewalks and streets around our school safe.

Wellness/Whole Child Network (Joint PS 9/PTO Working Group)
Make sure that our children eat nutritious food at school, get enough exercise during the day, and that our school environment is a healthy one in every respect. We now have a salad bar for the cafeteria and more funding for exercise. We also provide healthy snacks on Movie Nights.
