P.S. 9 parent Jill Santopietro will bring multi-sensory, multi-disciplinary food labs to students through this entertaining and educational after-school workshop. Children will explore foods that they use often but perhaps know little about. Some of our labs explore foods including: corn, wheat, eggs, milk, oil, chocolate, semolina, herbs, spices, potatoes, oats, and other vegetables and fruits. In our corn lab, for example, students learn how corn was first grown by the Mayans and they explore the biology of the plant. They pull dried kernels off of dent corn, make corn husk dolls, pop popcorn from a cob, grind corn kernels, and turn them into masa dough and then into corn tortillas. The labs allows students to touch, taste, smell, hear, and see their food – to create a deeper connection to the food that is so important to the health of their bodies and the environment.Jill Santopietro is a food instructor to children and adults, writer, and recipe developer. http://www.jillsantopietro.com/
