The PTO is pleased to offer the following enrichment programs, in conjunction with outside vendors, for the January through June 2012 semester:
MONDAYS
Winter Session classes meet Jan. 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; March 5, 12, 19, 26; April 2.
LANGO SPANISH, $180. 3:30-4:30 pm. Pre-K-1st grade. 2nd grade-5th grade, 4:30-5:30 pm. Lango offers dynamic and engaging Spanish classes Our classes teach children a new language in an immersion-based setting using songs, stories, games, dance — even yoga to engage children in their new language. Within two or three classes, kids learn key phrases in their new language through simple, repeated songs and chants. Meanwhile, they become familiar with more complex aspects of the language by engaging in “adventures,” tactile and movement-based games that require them to solve simple problems – in their new language, of course! These adventures, starring the Lango Kids, our multicultural cast of characters, take students to other lands and cultures to ensure that their language instruction is combined with cultural exposure. Storybook included.
PIANO SCHOOL OF NYC, $160. Half-hour classes, 3-5:30 pm, grouped by age, Pre-K-5, exact schedule TBA. (Also available WEDNESDAYS). All students will be encouraged to learn basic Music & Piano Skills: Introduction to Piano, listening, singing, clapping, followed by note reading & writing, Music Theory, Music History, Piano/Keyboard skills, and more. SUPER SOCCER STARS, $250. 4:30-5:30 pm for 3rd-5th grades. (ALSO TUES and WED for other grades.) New York’s most popular children’s soccer program, teaches soccer in a fun, non-competitive and educational environment. Super Soccer Stars uses soccer to nurture, build self-confidence and develop teamwork in every class. An age-specific curriculum, positive reinforcement, and a low child-to-coach ratio ensure that each child improves at his or her own pace while having a blast. http://supersoccerstars.com
TUESDAYS

YOUNG PLAYERS DRAMA, “Storybook Theater.” $120. 3:30-4:15 pm. One section for pre-K and K, another for 1st and 2nd graders. Stories come alive when students use their bodies, voices, and imaginations! While learning the fundamentals of theater through games, music and movement, students’ imaginations are developed along with their social, physical and cognitive skills. http://yptheater.org/
SHUTTERBUGS PHOTOGRAPHY, $125. 4-5 pm. Pre-K-5. During this afterschool enrichment cluster, students will learn the basics of digital photography. They will learn to master concepts such as focusing on and framing various subjects. In addition, students will learn about posing by taking pictures of one another. Throughout the course, each student will be photographed. Copies of the photos taken will be given to the students to take home. If you want your child to be your family’s “paparazz,” then this enrichment opportunity is “picture perfect”! If you have your own digital camera please feel free to bring it each Tuesday.

STRINGS VIOLIN from Performing Arts & Creative Classes, $150 (PLUS vendor’s $25 registration fee for new students). 4:30-5:30 pm. K-5. Students will learn to read music, develop their understanding of tempo and rhythm, correct hand positioning, bowing, fingering, the basics of posture and instrument care. Classes include introduction to music history, theory and composition. Students will be able to play level-appropriate songs individually and as a group (available to grades k-8). Class culminates with a year-end spring recital. Students’ own instrument is required, and a materials list will be provided. Sibling discounts are available.

MUSIC START, $160. 3:30-4:30 pm. Pre-K-5. MusicStart® is a patented progressive music learning system that balances fun and development of skills. The MusicStart® Keyboard is specially designed for learning. It uses 4 instructive attachments that vary the challenge, from color matching to reading standard musical notation. MusicStart® is preparation for (or a supplement to) playing any instrument and teaches step-by-step problem solving. EZRA GUITAR, $210 (does not include guitar). 45-minute classes, 3-5 pm, Pre-K-5, grouped by age, exact schedule TBA. Ezra Guitar is a fresh and innovative method that will teach students the basic elements of music making, from reading music to performance. Through creative games and ensemble work, children will leave each lesson with a sense of accomplishment and musical knowledge that will remain with them as a foundation for any future musical endeavors. FRIDAYS
Winter Session classes meet Jan. 27; Feb. 3, 10, 17; March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; April 20.
HIP-HOP DANCE, $100, 2:50-3:30 Pre-K-1st grade. (If enough interest we will add a 2nd-5th grade class from 3:30-4:10. Please register if interested.) Younger kids will learn creative movement with a hip-hop focus. They will stretch, jump, dance and play movement games. Older students also learn the history behind the movements and techniques. Dance styles students will explore include Roboting, Breaking, Popping, Boogaloo, Krumping and many more. Instructor Habby Jacques, one of the pioneers of a Caribbean-influenced style of break-dancing called flex-dancing, attended the Hip-Hop Conservatory.
SONGWRITING with Jen Chapin, $100, 3-4 pm, 3rd-5th grade. Whether or not you sing or play and instrument or have ever written a song before, this program will get you started in expressing yourself through appreciation, understanding and composition of music and lyrics. ZL AEROFUN AVIATION, $150, 3-4 pm, pre-K-5. A model airplane educational program where students learn not only to build and fly planes but also the skills important to success. Managing their own projects from start to finish, students will learn basic Aviation, Aerodynamics, Mathematics, Modeling, and Craftsmanship, instilling in the students a sense of accomplishment and pride. http://zlaerofun.com/
NEW YORK CHESS & GAMES, $100, 3:30-4:30, pre-K-5. Whether introducing beginner students to the game or enhancing and developing the play of experienced students, NYCG’s curriculum is taught in a fun and engaging way. The instructors are patient, friendly and have years of experience teaching chess to children. NYCG’s teachers create a magical learning experience through the use of unique methodology and a variety of special teaching aids. Some of the games and activities include Chess, Monopoly, Dominoes, Backgammon and Scrabble. Students participate in activities and contests to demonstrate what they’ve learned and acquire awards, trophies and other keepsakes as evidence of their accomplishments.
