Basic information about the program:

• It’s open to students who begin Kindergarten in the 2012-2013 school year
• The class includes native English and native Spanish speakers
• All academic subjects are taught in both languages
• 50% of instruction is in English and 50% in Spanish
• It begins in Kindergarten and will continue through 5th grade
• Students develop fluency and literacy in their first and second language
• It’s free!

[salon]718, a great hair salon just down the block from PS 9, has generously offered to donate a portion service costs to PS 9. For a limited time only, between Sunday, January 22nd through Sunday, February 5th, when you book an appointment, mention the PS 9 fundraiser and half of the cost of a haircut will be donated to our school.

The owner of the salon, Michaella, also a Brooklyn mom (with great hair!) has been styling men and women’s hair for two decades. Prior to opening her own salon, she managed top salons in NY and was the head stylist for national and local televised make-over shows. She has also trained some of the country’s finest stylists in cut and color.

Whether it’s a cut, color, or a blow-out that you need to cure those winter blues, Michaella and her staff can accommodate you. Their rates are very reasonable so check out the wide range of services offered then call to make an appointment at 718-623-6153.

WHAT: PS 9 is getting healthy! The meeting is a chance to help shape the Wellness Council and decide how to spend our grant money. Some of what the council is expected to do:

•Work on nutritious food options in our school

•Increase opportunities for physical activity

•Identify health needs for students and staff

•Monitor and evaluate implementation of school wellness policies

Come help us shape a healthy future!

Monday, November 14th is picture day for PS 9. All grades, pre-K through 5th will get the chance to have their pictures taken. Forms will be backpacked by November 4th, so you will have a week to decide which package you would like. Please remember to bring in the order form with the cash, check, or money order on November 14th. 

We will need parent volunteers to help the day run smoothly. We have a lot of students to get to and would like for each child to look his/her best!  Duties for parent volunteers are as follows: class escort, to lead classes to the photographer’s location (gym or auditorium); portrait stylist, to check that hair and collars are down; and signboard managers, to help the photographer put the name of the class, year, etc. correctly on the board for class pictures.

Feed those hungry voters and earn some money for PS 9!

Help feed those hungry voters and earn some money for PS 9! You can bake something to sell, pick up a box of doughnuts, or volunteer an hour or two of your time.  We are trying to staff and sell during the voter crunch time, 7-10a.m. and 4:30-7p.m. You can also make something that will keep overnight and drop it off Monday.

This is a low-commitment fundraiser so take advantage! Please contact christine.scanlon@gmail.com or contact your class parent to let us know what you can bring.

Literary Character Parade
And Harvest Festival
Monday, October 31st

A PS 9 fall tradition! Students parade around the block dressed as their favorite literary characters. The parade begins at 9am.

This is followed by the Harvest Festival at 10:50am, an event for students hosted by the PS 9 5th grade. This year’s theme: the Wild, Wild, West! The 5th grade is planning a fun filled day for the school with many games and activities. We need PS 9 parents to help provide them with supplies, like plain cupcakes (we need one for every student), icing and sprinkles for decorating, cereal and thread for jewelry-making and decorations for treat bags.

If you are free for an hour or two on Monday, please stop by to volunteer your time. Gym decorating will take place Monday morning, before drop-off and the festivities will last from 10:50-a.m. through 2:30p.m.

Topics to be discussed include an update on the flood/sewage overflow and a message from Principal D’Avilar and parent Co-ordinator Charmaine Derrel-Jacob. hear about the progress of PS 9 subcommittees and learn about upcoming events like the Candy Sale, Silent Auction, and Picture Day.

Show off your Baking Skills

If you love to bake or simply want to volunteer your time to help make PS 9 events special, you can call Laura Jaffe, PTO Co-Preside, at 917-673-2157 or the PTO office at 718-638-3260, ext 7. You can even stop by the PTO office Monday, Wednesday or Friday during school hours to find out what events you may be able to participate in. Here are a few coming up soon:

• Hispanic Heritage Day, Friday Oct. 14
• Harvest Festival, Monday, Oct. 31
• Election Day Bake Sale, Tuesday, Nov. 8

And if you love to throw parties, your skills would be most welcome on the Hospitality Committee. They will be meeting after the general PTO meeting. Or you can get in touch with Maria McGrath at mariaw@brooklynmcgrath.net.

Come to learn about PS 9 Committees

There is a committee that is just right for you! From fund raising and grant writing to gardening and bake sales, these committees have been able to accomplish amazing things for our school. Don’t be afraid that a busy schedule means you can’t participate. Most committees are able to take advantage of email, document sharing, and other online wonders. At this meeting , committees will be breaking of into groups so you can participate and meet members who will be happy to answer any questions.

During the meeting, childcare will be provided in the gym.

Throughout the week of August 22, we will set up ARIS Parent Link access stations in select libraries in every borough. You can visit one of these sites to receive your username and password. (Note: For security purposes, only authorized parents will be given usernames and passwords. Please bring photo identification for verification purposes.)

What is ARIS Parent Link? ARIS Parent Link is a secure, online location where you can find your child’s daily attendance, as well as periodic assessments and NY State test results, including Regents exams. Parents of students in middle school and high school can also view report card grades, unofficial transcripts, and important information about high school graduation requirements. ARIS Parent Link can also help you find activities you can do at home with your child to improve his or her achievement.
