Dual Language General Information
In the 2011-2012 school year, P.S. 9 started a Spanish-English dual language program by establishing a kindergarten Dual Language (DL) class. As a school, we believe that a dual language program will help our students to become biliterate, bilingual and bicultural. Children who know more than one language have intellectual, educational, personal, social, and economic advantages that will continue throughout their lives.
The goals of the program are:
1. Students will develop social and academic linguistic competencies in two languages in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
2. Students will achieve academically at or above grade level in all content areas in both languages.
3. Students will develop positive cross-cultural perspectives and intersocial aptitudes.
The Dual Language program has added a grade every year as it progresses. In 2013, we opened a Dual Language pre-kindergarten class, and in 2014 we added a second Pre-k DL class and we are now serving grades Pre-K through 4th in the Dual Language setting. The P.S. 9 dual language program is designed as a stand alone model in which one teacher teaches both languages in a 50/50 configuration. It has a balanced language population that integrates Spanish dominant speakers with native English speakers. This model supports one of the essential goals of dual language education of social, academic, and cultural interactions between students from the two language backgrounds.
The Dual Language program at PS 9 is a developmental, language enrichment, bilingual education program that integrates students who are native English speakers and native speakers of another language, for all or most of their content area instruction. The students of each language group serve as language models for each other. The P.S. 9 Dual Language program is designed as a standalone model in which one teacher teaches both languages in a 50/50 configuration.
The goal of the Dual Language program at PS 9 is to provide all students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) and who are English proficient (EP) with an academically rigorous curriculum in both languages. This will enable them to meet or exceed the New York State and City standards. Students are expected to build academic skills in their first language in an effort for them to be able to transfer such skills to the second language. More importantly, the end goal of our Dual Language program is for students to become bilingual, bi-literate, and bicultural individuals.
At PS 9 all students are welcomed to enroll in our Dual Language program. Students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) or who are English Proficient (EP) are encouraged to participate. While there are guidelines that our school must adhere to in regards to placement, program participation is based on parental choice. It is of optimum importance that parents are committed to the philosophy and goals of the Dual Language model.
Dual Language Application for 2016-17
The application for both kindergarten and pre-kindergarten DL programs are part of the respective Department of Education citywide processes. After Round 1 offers are made and in-school registration begins, DL testing, lottery and offers will follow. Questions?
